Kyle Larson capped off a challenging day of racing in Iowa with a triumphant victory in the Capitani Classic sprint car event at Knoxville Raceway on Sunday night. The 14th running of the $13,000 competition drew a record 87 entries and featured intense competition throughout the 25-lap main event. Larson’s win marked his second Capitani Classic title and came just hours after a disappointing finish in the NASCAR Cup Series race earlier that day.
Larson’s NASCAR experience at Iowa Speedway proved frustrating, as he finished 33rd in the Iowa Corn 350 after being involved in a collision with teammate Alex Bowman. After starting second and running competitively early, a four-wide situation developed when another competitor’s vehicle stalled, ultimately ending Larson’s day prematurely. Despite the setback, Larson headed to the sprint car event determined to salvage his racing day.
In the Capitani Classic, Larson methodically worked his way forward, eventually taking the lead on lap 19 and holding on through the closing laps. He successfully defended against Rico Abreu’s challenge to secure the victory. David Gravel, who started from pole position, finished third behind Abreu, with Aaron Reutzel and Austin McCarl rounding out the top five. Larson credited clean air and his adjustments on the track for the win, noting that he struggled early in the race before finding his rhythm.
