Austrian director Sandra Wollner’s “Everytime” has claimed the top prize at the Sarajevo Film Festival, taking home the Heart of Sarajevo award for best narrative feature film. The film, which previously won recognition at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, was selected unanimously by a jury led by two-time Oscar nominee Emily Watson. The panel commended the work as a “mesmerically elastic and transcendental grief-soaked ghost story” that achieves moments of cinematic grace.
“Everytime” marks Wollner’s third feature film and tells the story of a mother, daughter, and teenage boy bound by tragedy who travel to the Canary Islands for a family vacation that never materializes. As the coastal setting unfolds, the boundaries between past and present gradually blur. Since its Cannes premiere, critics have praised Wollner’s masterful command of the medium and emotional depth, with predictions that the film will reach wider audiences than her previous works.
The Sarajevo Film Festival also honored several other notable achievements. Georgian filmmaker Ana Urushadze won best director for “Supporting Role,” while Eva Kostić earned best actress recognition for her compelling performance in the North Macedonian debut “17.” Adrian Văncică claimed best actor honors for his work in the Romanian film “You Don’t Belong Here.” The documentary prize went to “To Hold a Mountain,” directed by Biljana Tutorov and Petar Glomazić, a film that previously garnered awards at Sundance and Poland’s Millennium Docs Against Gravity festival.
