Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve departed Tuesday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants after being struck by a pitch on his left foot. Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt threw an 82 mph slider that hit Altuve during the first inning. The Astros organization confirmed that Altuve sustained a bruised foot from the incident.
Despite the injury, Altuve initially remained in the game following an examination by team medical staff. He completed his base running duties and took the field for the bottom of the first inning. However, the 36-year-old did not return to the field for defensive play in the third inning and was replaced by Nick Allen.
Altuve, a two-time World Series champion in his 16th major league season, entered the game with a .240 batting average, 13 home runs, and 35 RBIs. The Astros held first place in the AL West standings heading into the matchup with San Francisco.
