Apple has reduced the price of its signature Polishing Cloth by more than half, bringing the cost down from $19 to $9. The microfibre cleaning product, which launched in 2021, promises to safely maintain various Apple displays using soft, nonabrasive material. However, consumers may want to reconsider whether the discount makes the purchase worthwhile.
The Polishing Cloth has become emblematic of Apple’s premium pricing strategy. When tech teardown experts examined the original $19 version, they discovered it consists simply of two fabric pieces adhered together. While the product technically works with numerous Apple devices dating back to the 2010 iPod Shuffle, it functions identically to generic microfibre cloths available at significantly lower prices elsewhere. The company’s Apple Store listing has been updated with refreshed compatibility information, but the product itself remains unchanged.
Upon its October 2021 debut, the Polishing Cloth generated substantial demand, with Apple extending delivery windows by several weeks and facing backorders extending into January. Despite the 50-percent price reduction, consumers seeking basic screen cleaning functionality can purchase bulk packs of comparable cloths for considerably less money. For Apple enthusiasts committed to purchasing branded accessories regardless of value, the new price point may prove attractive, while practical shoppers will likely find better alternatives elsewhere.
