Google has introduced a tap-to-share capability to its Quick Share feature, bringing Android devices closer to the functionality already available through Apple’s AirDrop. The new feature allows compatible devices to exchange files and contact information by simply bringing them near each other. Users can access this functionality through the share menu and tap their phones together to initiate the transfer.
The technology relies on NFC and proximity detection to streamline wireless sharing of various content types, including photos, videos, and contact details. Starting today, the update is rolling out to Pixel 6 series devices and all newer Pixel models. Samsung users will gain access through the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Fold 8, and Flip 8 models in the coming weeks.
Google plans to expand this tap-to-share functionality across additional Android devices by the end of the year, though the company has not yet announced which specific models will receive the update. This expansion represents a broader push to make wireless file sharing more seamless across the Android ecosystem.
