The Zurich Film Festival has announced its Gala Premieres lineup, featuring ten standout films that will showcase both established auteur cinema and anticipated awards contenders. Among the selections are two significant German productions making their world debuts: Andreas Dresen’s “Love, After All” and Doris Dörrie’s “How Can I Help?” The festival’s programming also includes notable films such as “I Play Rocky” and “Josephine,” both expected to generate considerable discussion during the upcoming awards season.
Festival CEO Christian Jungen emphasized that the Gala Premieres section celebrates auteur filmmaking designed to reach wider audiences. He highlighted the significance of securing world premieres from two prominent figures in German cinema, noting that both Dresen and Dörrie create works grounded in everyday experiences that offer subtle commentary on contemporary society. “I Play Rocky” chronicles the behind-the-scenes story of how Sylvester Stallone fought to star in the 1977 Best Picture winner, while “Josephine” explores how a family copes after a child witnesses a violent crime.
From a Swiss perspective, the festival director stressed the importance of “111 – Echoes From Halifax,” a drama examining the 1998 Swissair Flight 111 disaster near Halifax and its profound impact on communities and families affected by the tragedy. The complete program for the 22nd Zurich Film Festival, running September 24 through October 4, will be unveiled on September 9.
