Alabama Shakes has returned with their first studio album in over a decade. The rock and soul group, featuring Brittany Howard, Zac Cockrell, and Heath Fogg, released “I Must Be Dreaming” following an unexpected reunion that began as a charitable benefit concert. The band last worked together in 2015 when their album “Sound & Color” achieved chart success and Grammy recognition before members pursued individual projects.
The reunion came about organically when Howard agreed to perform at a December 2024 fundraiser for a struggling Tuscaloosa brewery. She invited her former bandmates to join her for what was supposed to be a surprise appearance. What followed was a series of rehearsals that sparked creative momentum, leading the group to record new material. Howard initially envisioned an EP, but the sessions yielded enough material for a full-length album.
Howard describes the new project as a reflection on contemporary turbulence, both societal and personal. The album title captures this duality—acknowledging the surreal nature of current events while celebrating moments of beauty and hope that persist despite chaos. Songs like “American Dream” and “I Feel Hope Coming” explore themes of social unity and collective action, emphasizing the importance of people coming together during uncertain times.
