Michelle Yeoh has received the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award at the 31st Busan International Film Festival. This prestigious annual honor celebrates Asian film industry contributors who have significantly advanced cinema throughout the continent. The ceremony will take place during the festival’s opening on October 6 at the Busan Cinema Center.
The Malaysian-born performer launched her career in Hong Kong action films during the 1980s and 1990s before achieving international prominence through roles in major productions. Her breakthrough came with appearances in films including a James Bond installment and the critically acclaimed martial arts epic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” In recent years, her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” earned her the Academy Award for lead actress, making her the first Asian performer to win in that category, alongside victories at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Golden Globes.
The festival will showcase Yeoh’s extensive body of work through a special retrospective program featuring several of her films, including “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and her latest project. Her connection to Busan spans over two decades, with multiple previous festival appearances dating back to 2002. The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs from October 6-15, coinciding with the 21st Asian Contents and Film Market.
