World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler competed through hand, foot and mouth disease at the BMW Championship in St. Louis, finishing in a tie for 10th place. The golfer revealed he had battled painful blisters on his hands and feet throughout the four-day event at Bellerive Country Club, yet managed to shoot a second consecutive round of 2-under 68 on Sunday.
Despite the physical challenges, Scheffler acknowledged that his own stubbornness kept him from withdrawing from the tournament. He noted that gripping the club proved particularly difficult early in the week, but felt his game was strong enough to push through the initial rounds. Some members of his team suggested he sit out, yet the top-ranked player chose to remain in competition, ultimately accumulating a 7-under score for the week.
Scheffler attributed his ability to complete the tournament largely to adrenaline, noting that his legs remained unaffected by the illness. He acknowledged that limiting his practice and workout routines in favor of rest may not have been ideal preparation. While his throat continued to bother him, he reported that his hands felt noticeably better by Sunday, even nearly forgetting to avoid shaking hands with fellow competitor Cam Young on the final hole.
As Scheffler prepares for the upcoming Tour Championship at East Lake, he expressed optimism about his recovery, expecting his remaining symptoms to clear up within days.
