Researchers in Brazil have discovered a troubling public health concern: wild boars on commercial farms are harboring dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Scientists collected samples from 100 European wild boars raised on two farms in Goiás State to investigate longstanding suspicions about disease transmission risks associated with the boar farming industry.
The findings revealed an alarming situation regarding E. coli contamination. More than half of the tested animals carried the bacterium, and nearly all of those cases involved multidrug-resistant strains capable of withstanding multiple classes of antibiotics. The resistant bacteria showed particular resilience against commonly prescribed, affordable medications like tetracycline and amoxicillin. While Salmonella was rarely detected, the pervasiveness of resistant E. coli prompted researchers to describe their discovery as striking.
The source of this resistance remains unclear, as farm managers reported the animals were not routinely treated with antibiotics. Scientists theorize that environmental factors may be responsible, including resistant genes persisting in soil and water that wild boars encounter through their highly mobile, opportunistic foraging habits. As commercial boar farming expands in Brazil and escaped animals continue establishing wild populations across the continent, these pigs could become increasingly significant reservoirs for spreading antimicrobial-resistant pathogens to livestock, wildlife, and human populations.
Health officials are now advocating for including captive wild boars in surveillance networks to monitor disease transmission risks as the industry continues to grow.
