Uber has introduced a live video streaming capability for its teen accounts, enabling parents and guardians to observe their children’s rides in real-time. The feature, which became available in select U.S. markets this week, accesses the front-facing camera on drivers’ smartphones to transmit footage directly to linked adults. When a teenager with an Uber account begins a trip and the driver has enabled video recording, the supervising adult receives a notification and can access the live feed by tapping it. Both the teen passenger and driver are alerted when a guardian is watching, and the stream terminates automatically when the ride ends.
The implementation of this monitoring tool does carry practical limitations. The quality and usefulness of the video depends largely on how the driver positions their phone. Without proper mounting equipment, parents may only see vehicle interiors rather than meaningful ride details. However, since phone mounts are widespread among Uber drivers, guardians will typically have adequate visibility of at least the driver themselves. Uber recommends that drivers utilize phone mounts or integrated vehicle systems to maximize video quality.
The video feature joins other safety mechanisms already available for teen accounts, including live trip tracking, PIN verification, and audio recording. Recorded footage remains encrypted and inaccessible to users after trips conclude but will be reviewed if safety concerns are reported. The nationwide rollout will continue over the coming weeks as Uber gathers user feedback.
