Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton recently discussed his 2020 NBA Draft experience, revealing that the Golden State Warriors came remarkably close to selecting him. During an appearance on the “Numbers on the Board” podcast, Haliburton described his workout with the Warriors as exceptional, noting he performed flawlessly and believed he would be a natural fit alongside Stephen Curry in their offensive system.
Despite the impressive audition, Warriors executives explained they could not justify using the second overall pick on Haliburton, citing the risk involved with such a high selection. Haliburton eventually fell to the twelfth pick, where the Sacramento Kings drafted him. He later joined the Indiana Pacers and has since established himself as a rising star, averaging 19.5 points and 10.1 assists while earning playoff recognition following Indiana’s Finals run.
The Warriors instead selected James Wiseman at number two, a decision that has been widely questioned in retrospect. Wiseman struggled with injuries and has since departed the league, while the franchise also experienced notable disappointment with subsequent draft choices like Jonathan Kuminga. Having secured Haliburton alongside Curry and Draymond Green could have provided Golden State with a more stable long-term foundation as the team navigates its future without the dominant roster that produced recent championships.
