Research suggests that a significant weakening of Atlantic Ocean currents could severely disrupt global agriculture and destabilize food security worldwide. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, which transports heat across the globe and influences climate patterns, has already weakened substantially due to climate change. Scientists modeled how a 60% decline in this current system would affect production of major crops including wheat, maize, and rice over a century-long period.
The modeling results revealed that global crop yields would decline by 5.3% once the ocean circulation had substantially weakened. However, regional impacts varied dramatically, with some countries facing far steeper losses. Nations including Germany, Ukraine, Canada, and Scandinavia could experience cereal yield reductions of up to 19%, while areas like India, Pakistan, China, Iran, Sudan, and Eritrea would face severe precipitation declines that could threaten agricultural survival. Researchers acknowledged that yearly variations might exceed 10% in certain periods, potentially triggering significant food price increases as nations restrict exports and stockpile crops.
Global food prices could surge between 17% and 40% depending on how countries respond to agricultural shocks and their preparedness levels. The United States would face approximately 3% domestic losses in wheat and corn production. Experts emphasize that such an event would require unprecedented international cooperation and food trade among regions, as many areas would become dependent on imports to sustain their populations during this fundamental climate disruption.
