Wagner High School’s volleyball team has made a strong start to the season, building on the momentum from last year’s state tournament appearance. The Red Raiders have won six consecutive matches after an opening-set loss to Vermillion, compiling a 6-1 record through early September. Coach Stacey Knebel credits the team’s success to the experienced players who returned from last year’s squad, which finished eighth at the state tournament.
The core of returning talent includes senior setter Braxton Nedved, who has recorded 146 set assists through seven matches while also contributing 23 kills and eight service aces. Junior outside hitter Hannah Holzbauer leads the team offensively with 58 kills, while senior middle hitters Ravyn Medricky, Brianna Fuchs, and Mateya Bruguier provide additional firepower. Knebel highlighted the leadership displayed by these veterans as instrumental in the team’s quick start and depth across the roster.
Holzbauer has emerged as Wagner’s primary offensive threat, adding 61 defensive digs to lead the team on that end. Medricky has tallied 38 kills, Bruguier 29, and Fuchs 26. The Red Raiders’ recent success includes winning the Parkston Invite, where they defeated several opponents while dropping just one set to Class B No. 3 Warner. Wagner continues building momentum with a scheduled home match against Platte-Geddes on Tuesday, September 8.
