Gabriel Mascaro, whose film “The Blue Trail” won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival, has partnered with prominent Brazilian producer Paula Cosenza to establish Trema, a new production company based in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco state in Northeast Brazil. The venture aims to position the region as a major hub for filmmaking, combining international co-productions, scripted television series, and cinema focused on distinctive artistic visions.
Mascaro expressed enthusiasm about developing production infrastructure in his native region, stating that the company will work to transform the cultural significance of Pernambuco cinema into tangible resources for production, financing, and talent development. Cosenza brings extensive experience in international collaborations through previous projects including “Memory House” and “Tropicalia,” both created with overseas partners.
Trema launches with an ambitious slate of projects already in development or financing stages. The lineup includes “Three Dark Nights” from director Theo Court, “Rafael” directed by João Paulo Miranda Maria, and “Arca” from Chilean filmmaker Matías Bize, among others. The company also announced “100 Days” by Carlos Saldanha and plans for a limited series titled “Oásis,” demonstrating its commitment to both artistic and mainstream productions.
Beyond production, Trema plans to nurture emerging talent across Northeast Brazil and establish the region’s craftspeople on major projects, drawing filmmakers from throughout the area rather than concentrating solely on Recife or São Paulo-based professionals.
