The beloved comedy series “Ted Lasso” is returning for a fourth season, and the cast revealed that women’s sports became the driving force behind bringing the show back. Actor Hannah Waddingham, who portrays team owner Rebecca Welton, expressed confidence in the revival even when creator Jason Sudeikis had doubts about continuing. She credited the show’s talented writing team and what she saw as an inevitable next chapter for the story.
The perfect setup for the new direction came at the end of Season 3, when character Keeley presented Rebecca with plans for adding a women’s team to AFC Richmond. Co-creator Brendan Hunt explained that he deliberately avoided pressuring Sudeikis about returning, waiting instead until Sudeikis independently decided the moment was right to move forward with the women’s team storyline. This organic decision ultimately launched production into what Hunt called “the races.”
The fourth season introduces several new cast members who will play athletes and coaches for the women’s squad. Tanya Reynolds joins as women’s coach Alice Chilton, a character who begins as tough and reserved before gradually warming to those around her. Additional newcomers include Jude Mack as goalie Boots and Abbie Hern as athlete Gemma. Hunt emphasized the importance of finding actors who could seamlessly integrate with the show’s established ensemble and rhythm, describing the process as similar to joining an existing band.
