Talia Ryder has joined the cast of “Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders,” a contemporary reimagining of the classic 1920s horror film widely recognized as the first true horror movie. Ryder will star alongside Michael Shannon, who plays the titular villain Doctor Caligari, a traveling mesmerist whose control over a sleepwalker leads to a series of brutal murders across towns.
The film, written and directed by John Erick Dowdle, recently completed production in Germany. Ryder portrays Jane, a perceptive young woman whose unusual abilities to sense what others cannot have isolated her from society. Haunted by her sister’s death and parental abandonment, Jane suspects Doctor Caligari is responsible for her boyfriend’s mysterious disappearance—though few believe her claims.
Ryder earned critical recognition for her breakout role in “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which garnered her nominations from both the Independent Spirit Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards. The project is being produced by Brothers Dowdle Productions and Anton, with financing and worldwide distribution rights handled by Anton. The film will be available at the Toronto International Film Festival market.
