Eighteen-year-old Filip Nowacki demonstrated exceptional focus by postponing the opening of his A-level examination results to concentrate on competing at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. The Jersey swimmer’s commitment paid off when he secured gold in the men’s 200 metres breaststroke final on Thursday, finishing with a time of 2:07.70 to narrowly defeat Netherlands competitor Caspar Corbeau.
Nowacki’s achievement adds to a remarkable summer of competitive success. Last month, he made history as Jersey’s first Commonwealth Games medallist in 36 years by winning gold in the 200 metres breaststroke, whilst also capturing silver in the 100 metres breaststroke. The teenager, who took A-levels in Economics, Mathematics and Physics, deliberately avoided opening his results envelope until after his European Championships competition concluded, stating he needed complete focus during this major tournament.
The swimmer’s ability to balance academic and athletic demands reflects the supportive environment provided by Millfield School in Somerset. Nowacki maintained eight training sessions weekly throughout his examination period without compromising his studies. He continues competing at the championships, with the 50 metres breaststroke scheduled for Friday morning, before beginning studies at Loughborough University’s Swimming Performance Centre in September.
