Spotify announced Tuesday that it will introduce “AI Persona” labels to identify artist profiles representing artificial intelligence-generated identities rather than real people. Beginning in mid-September, these badges will appear prominently on artist profiles, in search results, and across playlist track rows to help users distinguish between human and AI-generated artists.
The streaming platform will not rely solely on voluntary disclosure from creators. Instead, Spotify will conduct its own review process to identify profiles featuring photorealistic AI-generated names and imagery, prioritizing accounts that have reached certain listener thresholds. Artists who believe they have been incorrectly labeled will have the option to appeal the designation through Spotify for Artists.
As part of the initiative, music from AI Personas will be excluded from Spotify’s editorial, algorithmic, and personalized recommendation systems by default. However, users who actively choose to follow an AI Persona artist will continue to receive their content. The company emphasized that these labels reflect judgments about artist identity rather than the creative methods used to produce the music itself.
This move represents Spotify’s continued effort to manage AI-generated content while maintaining user experience quality. The platform plans to introduce a reporting tool allowing users to flag unlabeled AI Persona profiles. The decision reflects broader industry concerns about low-quality automated content while the company simultaneously develops its own AI features, including AI-powered playlists and remixes.
