Spotify is implementing a new system to identify and label artificial intelligence-generated artists on its platform. Starting in mid-September, users will see an “AI Persona” badge displayed on artist profiles that do not represent actual people. The streaming service is already accepting voluntary disclosures from artists beginning immediately, though the platform plans to go beyond self-reporting to catch undisclosed AI identities.
To identify AI-generated artists, Spotify will employ both human reviewers and artificial intelligence detection tools to examine artist profiles, including names and images, for signs of photorealistic AI generation. Artists initially subject to review will be those meeting certain audience thresholds, prioritizing profiles with the most listener engagement. If Spotify suspects an artist identity is artificially generated, it will apply a “Likely AI Persona” badge and notify the affected artist, who can then appeal the designation.
Music attributed to AI personas will be excluded from editorial recommendations and personalized playlists by default. According to Spotify, this decision responds to listener feedback expressing frustration upon discovering an apparently human artist profile actually represents an AI creation. The company emphasized its commitment to highlighting authentic human artists while minimizing spam and low-effort content in its recommendation algorithms.
The initiative reflects growing concerns about artificial intelligence-generated music flooding streaming platforms. Spotify noted it will allow artists to disclose AI involvement in their creative process and plans to introduce a feature enabling listeners to flag suspicious artist profiles for review.
