South African Olympic swimming champion Chad le Clos experienced a devastating loss following his historic achievement at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 34-year-old athlete made headlines after securing his 21st Commonwealth Games medal, becoming the most decorated athlete in the event’s history. However, his celebration was cut short when a fire destroyed his apartment in Cape Town on July 30.
Le Clos announced the tragedy through social media, explaining that the blaze engulfed his residence in the Sea Point neighborhood, leaving nothing salvageable from the home where he had lived for over a decade. The fire spread rapidly through the apartment block, affecting multiple units. The incident also claimed the life of an elderly resident who had been le Clos’s neighbor for many years.
In response to the disaster, le Clos pledged to use his foundation to assist other residents affected by the fire in rebuilding their homes. The accomplished swimmer, who won gold in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2012 London Olympics and has earned four Olympic medals and 16 world titles throughout his career, indicated his intention to continue competing and is planning to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
