McVay pointed to a critical fourth-quarter decision as a turning point in the contest. With the Rams trailing 17-7 and facing fourth-and-goal near the 1-yard line, the coach opted for an aggressive play call rather than attempting a field goal. The 49ers’ defense stuffed quarterback Matthew Stafford on the attempted sneaker, seizing momentum and the ball. San Francisco subsequently drove 99 yards for a touchdown that put the game out of reach early in the second half.
The performance proved particularly disappointing given the Rams’ offseason additions, including star defensive end Myles Garrett. Stafford completed just 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards with no touchdowns, one of his worst outings in recent memory. Garrett failed to register any statistics on the box score, spending time benched as the 49ers imposed their will across all phases of the game.
