A major Russian military operation targeting the Kyiv region has resulted in at least 17 deaths and dozens of injuries, according to officials. The overnight assault involved ballistic missiles and unmanned aircraft striking residential neighborhoods, transportation infrastructure, and storage facilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky suggested that additional air defense systems could have prevented some of the casualties, highlighting gaps in the country’s defensive capabilities.
Ukrainian air defense forces managed to intercept a significant portion of the drone attacks, destroying 98 of 115 unmanned aircraft launched during the strike. However, the ballistic missiles proved more difficult to counter, with no reported interceptions of the 24 missiles fired. The attack damaged multiple locations across the region, with emergency crews extinguishing fires across approximately 230,000 square meters of affected areas.
Moscow claimed the strikes targeted military logistics and weapons distribution networks in the capital region. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continued their own offensive operations, targeting Russian civilian infrastructure in recent days. The escalating cycle of attacks from both sides reflects the intensifying nature of the conflict, with each nation disputing allegations of targeting noncombatants.
