A drone strike on a beach in southern Russia has resulted in seven deaths and dozens of injuries, according to regional authorities. The incident occurred near the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka on the Black Sea coast, a popular tourist destination. Among those killed were three children, with 40 people injured in total and 17 requiring hospitalization.
Video footage verified by the BBC shows the unmanned aircraft descending rapidly toward a cliff before exploding into a fireball on the beach as beachgoers watched from the shore and water. Regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev characterized the strike as a deliberate attack on civilians and attributed responsibility to Ukraine. However, the circumstances remain unclear, with some Ukrainian sources suggesting the drone was disabled by electronic jamming, while eyewitness accounts mention gunfire that may indicate Russian air defenses attempted to intercept it.
No warning sirens alerted residents or tourists to the impending strike, according to statements from those present. Witnesses described hearing gunfire similar to automatic weapons before the explosion occurred. One visitor reported that the incident caused significant distress to their child.
Ukraine has not commented on the incident. Both Russia and Ukraine have previously denied deliberately targeting civilians, though documented strikes have killed civilians on both sides throughout the ongoing conflict.
