According to local media outlets, four members of Uganda’s six-person boxing delegation went missing ahead of their scheduled departure on Tuesday, with at least one athlete indicating an intention to seek asylum. Similarly, a Pakistani boxer failed to board a return flight on the same day, prompting officials to open inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the disappearances.
The incidents reflect a recurring pattern at recent Commonwealth Games held in English-speaking nations. Following the 2018 Gold Coast competition in Australia, authorities continued searching for approximately 50 athletes and officials weeks after the event concluded, while an additional 190 individuals pursued asylum claims. The Glasgow Games, which drew roughly 3,000 athletes representing 74 nations across 11 days of competition, appears to have experienced similar challenges.
