Switzerland has officially selected “Who is Still Alive,” a documentary by director Nicolas Wadimoff, as its submission for the Academy Award for best international feature film. The Swiss Federal Office of Culture made the announcement, designating the film as the country’s official Oscar entry for the upcoming ceremony scheduled for March 14.
The documentary centers on nine Palestinian individuals who fled the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, exploring their experiences of displacement and loss against the backdrop of the ongoing Gaza War. The film premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival and has since garnered recognition at major international festivals, including a win at the Solothurn Film Festival and a nomination for best documentary at the Swiss Film Awards.
Director Wadimoff, who has previously created two other films addressing Palestinian experiences, stated that the selection represents both an honor and responsibility. He emphasized the importance of giving visibility and voice to the survivors featured in the documentary while championing Switzerland’s values of humanism and dialogue. The submission deadline for the international feature film category is September 30.
The film will be distributed internationally through various companies, including Watermelon Pictures in the United States and Una Mattina in France, with rights sold to additional regions across the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America.
