The New York Times has released a sports-themed version of its popular Connections word game in partnership with The Athletic. Today’s puzzle, numbered 684, challenges players to identify common links between 16 words organized into four distinct categories. Those familiar with baseball will find today’s challenge particularly manageable.
Like the original Connections game, this sports edition requires players to group words that share a meaningful connection. The puzzle features a color-coded difficulty system, with yellow representing the easiest category and purple the most challenging. Players have up to four mistakes before the game ends, and they can rearrange the board to help identify patterns more easily.
Today’s four categories include ways that sporting events begin, terms associated with youth baseball championships, names of American League Cy Young Award winners, and words that precede the term “final.” The complete solutions are: faceoff, first pitch, jump ball, and kickoff for the opening category; league, little, series, and world for the second; blue, cole, colon, and viola for the third; and quarter, semi, Stanley Cup, and World Cup for the final grouping.
The game resets daily with new puzzles that progressively increase in difficulty. Players can share their results on social media and return tomorrow for another sports-themed challenge.
