Matt Strauss, chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group, recently discussed the streaming landscape during an appearance on Variety’s “Strictly Business” podcast. With over two decades of experience at Comcast and NBCUniversal, Strauss reflected on Peacock’s trajectory since its 2020 launch and the platform’s recent achievement of profitability in the second quarter. The streamer added two million subscribers during that period, bringing its domestic base to 48 million users.
Strauss highlighted several content successes that contributed to Peacock’s momentum, including the hit reality series “Love Island,” coverage of the World Cup on both Peacock and Telemundo, and the scripted original “Five Star Weekend.” He emphasized that the platform’s strategy diverges from competitors’ early approaches, which focused primarily on scripted dramas and ad-free experiences. Instead, Peacock was designed as a broad-based service encompassing sports, news, unscripted programming, and movies alongside scripted content.
Looking ahead, Strauss discussed how NBCU plans to expand Peacock’s reach through a partnership with YouTube Premium and develop membership benefits that extend beyond streaming. He framed the industry shift as a “great re-bundling,” where major media companies recombine services after years of fragmentation. Strauss underscored the importance of live sports programming in driving subscriber retention and encouraging daily app usage, distinguishing Peacock’s approach from traditional binge-focused streaming models.
