LeBron James has announced his departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. The 41-year-old basketball star made the announcement via social media Friday, describing the move as his final career decision.
James’s transition comes after he contemplated retirement following his 23rd NBA season with Los Angeles. In a statement, he expressed uncertainty about his future in professional basketball but ultimately decided to continue competing. “I still truly love this game, and I have more to give,” James explained, emphasizing that his choice was driven by passion for competition rather than financial considerations.
The veteran player will join a 76ers roster featuring several All-Star caliber teammates, including Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and newly acquired Jaylen Brown. James will accept a two-year contract worth approximately $8 million, a significant reduction from his previous $53 million salary with the Lakers. The Philadelphia franchise, which last captured an NBA championship in 1983, has not advanced beyond the second round of Eastern Conference playoffs since 2001.
