Lazio have moved quickly to address their defensive needs following the departure of Alessio Romagnoli, who completed his transfer to Qatari club Al-Sadd on Thursday evening. The 31-year-old defender spent four seasons with the Serie A side before making the switch to the Middle East, leaving a gap in the Biancocelesti’s backline that the club is now working to fill.
The Roman outfit have identified Portuguese defender Diogo Leite as Romagnoli’s replacement. The 27-year-old became available on the free agent market after his contract with Union Berlin expired at the conclusion of the summer transfer window. During his time in the Bundesliga, Leite established himself as a reliable performer, accumulating 113 league appearances alongside 23 additional matches in other competitions for the German side.
Leite brings considerable experience from his career in Portugal, where he developed at Porto’s academy and later featured for Braga on a temporary basis during the 2021-22 campaign. According to reports, Lazio have scheduled a medical examination for Sunday, with the club expected to offer the defender a three-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico.
Should the transfer be completed successfully, Leite would reunite with Danilho Doekhi, his former Union Berlin centre-back partner who also joined Lazio as a free agent earlier in the summer, strengthening the defensive partnership at the club.
