Director Karthik Subbaraj’s latest Tamil-language film “Dorothy” has released its teaser ahead of a world premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. The production marks Subbaraj’s tenth feature-length directorial effort and will be showcased in the festival’s Centrepiece program, a section dedicated to acclaimed filmmakers and highly anticipated global releases.
Set in rural India during the early 1990s, the film explores how friendship, compassion and hope face challenges from systemic issues including caste discrimination, violence and prejudice. Despite its specific historical and geographical setting, Subbaraj emphasized that the narrative’s emotional core resonates universally. The project brings together producers Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, with a cast including Sananth, Rishikanth and Keerthy Suresh.
Renowned composer Ilaiyaraaja contributed the score, adding to his extensive filmography of over 1,500 productions. Both Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment are backing the venture, with Deshpande praising the teaser’s ability to convey the film’s emotional resonance and musical qualities. The companies highlighted Subbaraj’s talent for crafting deeply human stories through compelling cinema.
The film is scheduled for theatrical release worldwide, including in India, on September 25. This marks a return to Tamil-language filmmaking for Sikhya Entertainment following a four-year gap since their previous work in the language.
