A comprehensive international study published in JAMA Pediatrics has revealed a concerning trend: bacterial infections in children worldwide are increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Researchers examined data spanning two decades and used modeling to forecast future patterns through 2035. The findings indicate that certain dangerous bacteria, including Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella, will face significant resistance growth to critical medications in the coming years.
The research team analyzed over 106,000 bacterial samples collected from children and teenagers across 82 countries between 2004 and 2022. Results showed that resistance patterns diverged between wealthy and low-income nations. While high-income countries achieved improvements in resistance to first-line antibiotics, low-income regions experienced increases. Resistance to backup antibiotics rose substantially in both settings, with projections suggesting continued escalation through 2035. The problem appears especially severe in intensive care units and among very young children with serious infections.
Study researchers emphasize that pediatric antibiotic resistance remains largely overlooked compared to the adult problem, partly because tracking efforts combine both populations. Children face unique challenges since they have fewer antibiotic options available than adults. Poor sanitation and unregulated over-the-counter antibiotic access in resource-limited settings have accelerated resistance development.
Researchers stress these projections are not inevitable outcomes but rather warning scenarios assuming current trends continue unchanged. Coordinated intervention strategies could alter the trajectory.
