Alta High School achieved a dramatic comeback victory over Springville on Friday night, defeating the Red Devils 38-35 in their season-opening matchup in Sandy. The win marks revenge for the Hawks, who fell to Springville by a single score in last year’s season opener.
The Hawks built an early advantage, leading 17-7 at halftime thanks to defensive standout plays including a blocked punt return for a touchdown and a fumble recovery that led to a passing touchdown from quarterback Xavier Cocci to receiver Breck Warren. However, Springville surged back dramatically in the third quarter, scoring 28 points in that frame alone to take control of the contest and seemingly put the game out of reach.
The fourth quarter proved decisive as Alta’s defense forced a turnover with junior defensive back Bronson Schriever intercepting a Springville pass. The Hawks capitalized on the opportunity, methodically driving down the field with a ground-heavy attack before senior running back Treven Cooke punched in a six-yard touchdown run with just under three-and-a-half minutes remaining. Springville could not answer, turning the ball over on downs as Alta ran out the clock.
Head coach Blake Burdette acknowledged the messy nature of the contest, noting areas for improvement despite the victory. Alta will host Bingham next Thursday, while Springville travels to Green Canyon the following Friday, with both games scheduled for 7 p.m.
