The Gramado Film Festival has unveiled an ambitious new initiative designed to cultivate emerging talent in Brazilian cinema. The inaugural Residency for Young Filmmakers will bring together 60 aspiring professionals between ages 18 and 35 during the Gramado Film Market, scheduled for mid-August. Selected from over 200 submissions, participants must demonstrate prior experience working on film projects across disciplines including production, direction, acting, screenwriting, cinematography, and sound design.
The three-day intensive program features 17 sessions combining morning and afternoon workshops with evening festival screenings. The curriculum spans multiple critical areas of filmmaking, beginning with masterclasses on distribution strategies, narrative construction, and directorial techniques. Subsequent days emphasize industry integration, covering topics such as international career development, true crime storytelling, post-production processes, and sustainable production practices. The residency also addresses broader industry concerns, including public policy affecting Brazil’s audiovisual sector and evolving market dynamics in content consumption.
Industry veterans will lead the educational sessions, including distribution experts from Paris Filmes, one of Brazil’s most prominent independent film companies, and acclaimed director Silvio Guindane. These professionals aim to share practical insights about positioning films for maximum reach and impact across diverse markets. Participants hail primarily from Rio Grande do Sul, where Gramado is located, with representation from eight other Brazilian states, reflecting the festival’s commitment to nurturing filmmaking talent nationwide.
