Researchers have identified a previously unknown benefit associated with GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. According to findings published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, these widely-used drugs appear to offer protection against age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.
The investigation analyzed data from over 157,000 patients aged 60 and older who had obesity but no diabetes. Participants were divided into two groups: one receiving GLP-1 drugs for weight management and another using alternative weight-loss medications. During follow-up periods, patients taking GLP-1 medications demonstrated an 18 percent lower risk of developing AMD compared to those using other treatments, with some analyses showing a 30 percent reduction in risk.
Scientists remain uncertain about the mechanism behind this protective effect. The benefit could stem from GLP-1 drugs’ direct anti-inflammatory properties in the eye, or it may result from greater weight loss achieved by these medications, which independently reduces vision-threatening conditions. Additional research is needed to clarify whether the effect relates to the drug itself or the weight reduction it facilitates.
Study authors acknowledge limitations in their findings, noting the relatively short follow-up periods and the need for longer-term, prospective studies to validate these results. Further investigation into younger populations and the underlying biological mechanisms will be essential for understanding the full scope of GLP-1 medications’ effects on eye health.
The effects could go much further than we expected.
