The long-standing calculation that one dog year equals seven human years is inaccurate, according to recent scientific research. Investigators have developed a more precise formula for determining a dog’s biological age by analyzing DNA patterns. The new method reveals that dogs age at dramatically different rates depending on their life stage, maturing rapidly early on before the aging process slows considerably in their later years.
Researchers collected blood samples from 104 Labrador retrievers and examined chemical markers in their DNA called methylation patterns. By comparing these patterns with similar data from hundreds of humans, scientists determined how dogs’ biological aging corresponds to human aging. The resulting mathematical formula shows that a one-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 31-year-old human, while a two-year-old dog compares to a 42-year-old person. A dog reaching 12 years old has aged biologically to about 71 in human terms.
While this breakthrough provides valuable insight into canine aging, the study has limitations. The research focused exclusively on Labradors, and scientists note that different dog breeds with varying lifespans may follow different aging patterns. Size differences and factors such as whether a dog is purebred or mixed breed could influence the aging timeline.
Beyond calculating birthdays, this research helps scientists understand the aging process itself. Researchers discovered that certain genes show similar aging patterns across dogs, humans, and mice, suggesting that aging may be connected to developmental processes that continue throughout life. This discovery could eventually lead to treatments benefiting both human and canine health.
