Scientists have identified an unusual geological process unfolding beneath Italy’s Apennine Mountains. Researchers led by Stefano Tavani from the University of Florence discovered that Earth’s crust is gradually separating in a phenomenon known as delamination. In this process, the dense lower crust and underlying lithosphere peel away from the upper crust and sink into the Earth’s mantle. The separation is occurring along a migrating front that researchers compare to a zipper gradually opening beneath the Italian peninsula toward the Adriatic region.
The Apennines have long presented geologists with a paradoxical puzzle. While the mountain range experiences compression along its outer edges, the crust farther inland is simultaneously being pulled apart. This contradictory deformation has puzzled scientists for decades, as these opposing forces should not typically occur together in a mountain system. The mystery deepened about two million years ago when conditions changed, yet the paradoxical deformation persisted.
To solve this enigma, Tavani’s team analyzed decades of earthquake data, GPS measurements, satellite observations, and mapping of the Moho—the boundary between Earth’s crust and mantle. They discovered a zone spanning over 500 kilometers where the crustal boundaries from opposite sides overlap, marking the precise location where lower crust is detaching. This delamination front generates concentrated earthquake activity and produces what researchers describe as “accordion-like” deformation, with the mountain belt stretching internally while simultaneously compressing at its edges.
