Authorities at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany discovered a drone equipped with explosives in the cargo area near Ukrainian aircraft overnight. The discovery prompted officials to deploy a specialized robot to safely extract the device’s detonator before conducting a controlled explosion. Operations resumed on one runway shortly after, though the southern runway remained closed pending further investigation.
The incident coincided with a separate occurrence in which an unidentified object struck a cargo aircraft in the vicinity of the same airport. That object subsequently landed in Hanover with minimal damage to the plane. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the paired incidents as indicative of a “new level of threat,” emphasizing the professional nature of what he termed a “hybrid threat scenario.”
The Leipzig facility serves as a critical logistics hub and military transport center for NATO operations and Ukraine’s aerial cargo operations. Recent months have witnessed heightened security concerns following multiple unauthorized drone incursions over German military installations, energy infrastructure, and transportation networks. While German officials have suggested potential foreign involvement, no suspects have been officially named. Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany pointed toward Russian responsibility, though Moscow has not responded to the allegations.
