A masseur who cared for Diego Maradona has provided testimony in an ongoing trial in Argentina, describing the football icon’s declining condition in the days leading up to his death in 2020. According to his account, Maradona exhibited signs of severe physical deterioration, including swelling in his legs and fluid retention throughout his body. The masseur noted that the legendary player had withdrawn from basic self-care activities and appeared emotionally resigned to his circumstances.
During court proceedings, the masseur recounted efforts he made to alert Maradona’s medical team about concerning symptoms he had observed. He claimed to have urged doctors to maintain a more frequent presence in the patient’s care, citing the need for daily visits. Despite raising these concerns, he stated that the medical team reassured him the symptoms would resolve naturally, and no immediate action was taken to address the issues he had flagged.
Seven healthcare professionals have been standing trial since mid-April on allegations of potential negligence connected to Maradona’s death from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema at age 60. The defendants face sentences of up to 25 years if convicted, though they have denied wrongdoing and argued their limited clinical roles had no direct bearing on the causes of death. The trial is expected to continue beyond the current month.
