Portland Trail Blazers star Deni Avdija disclosed the circumstances behind his absence from Israel’s FIBA World Cup qualifying matches this past summer. Following a stellar season that earned him his first All-Star selection and helped the Blazers secure their first playoff appearance in five years, Avdija had planned to rejoin his national team for the competition.
Through a statement posted on social media, Avdija explained that a serious back injury prevented him from participating in the qualifying window. The forward emphasized his deep commitment to representing Israel, highlighting his history of playing through various challenges to wear his country’s jersey. However, he clarified that the decision to sit out involved collaboration with the Trail Blazers organization, which was unwilling to risk further complications to his health during his recovery period.
Avdija acknowledged the disappointment and criticism that comes with being unavailable for national team competitions, particularly given his status as one of Israel’s premier players. Nevertheless, he stressed that his dedication to his country remains unquestionable based on his track record of international appearances. The 24-year-old expressed his desire to return to action healthy and resume his role with the Israeli national team in future competitions.
With the NBA season approaching, Avdija is unlikely to be available for Israel’s next qualifying round in November, as it will coincide with the professional league’s regular season schedule.
