A forthcoming documentary will expose a major financial scandal involving comedian Dane Cook and his half-brother. According to the film “Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story,” which debuts September 29, Darryl McCauley embezzled at least $12 million from the entertainer while serving as his business manager. The theft, which came to light in 2008, represents one of the entertainment industry’s most significant cases of financial fraud by a family member.
McCauley employed creative methods to conceal his criminal activity, including stashing cash inside pasta sauce containers and storing money in safes. He withdrew funds incrementally from Cook’s accounts, taking amounts ranging from $20,000 to $100,000 without raising immediate suspicion. Cook has indicated that the actual theft may have exceeded the documented $12 million figure and believes additional money remains hidden.
McCauley subsequently pleaded guilty to larceny, embezzlement, and related charges alongside his wife, Erika. He received a six-year prison sentence and was ordered to repay the stolen funds. Following his release, McCauley disappeared from public view. In the documentary, Cook reflects on their shared childhood dreams of becoming comedians, noting that his brother ultimately pursued a different path as a corrections officer before betraying his trust in a dramatic fashion.
