The Washington Commanders are preparing for their preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins on Friday, but will be dealing with several notable absences. The two franchises are scheduled for a joint practice on Wednesday before facing off in their first preseason matchup.
Head coach Dan Quinn announced that center Nick Allegretti will miss both the practice and Friday’s game due to a calf strain suffered during the opening week of training camp. Quinn expressed optimism about Allegretti’s recovery timeline, suggesting a potential return for the team’s regular-season opener on Sunday. The initial one-week absence was extended by an additional week, though the center has been spotted on the sidelines in uniform this week.
Cornerback Trey Amos will also sit out both contests after suffering an ankle injury during Saturday’s practice. The second-year defensive back had already missed significant time after starting camp on the physically unable to perform list due to a fractured fibula from the previous season. Quinn indicated he would provide a clearer prognosis early next week regarding Amos’s availability going forward.
Tight end John Bates remains unavailable as well, though his injury is considered less serious. Quinn noted that Bates has been working on the sidelines and progressing toward a return, but will not participate in either the practice or preseason game.
