The Indianapolis Colts signed veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen on a one-year deal, but head coach Shane Steichen clarified that the move was not connected to concerns about Alec Pierce’s recovery from ankle surgery. Steichen emphasized that the two acquisitions operate independently of one another, with Indianapolis having pursued Allen since the summer months.
Allen and Pierce serve different roles within the Colts’ offensive scheme. Pierce functions as the team’s primary outside receiver and is among the league’s most dangerous deep threats, while Allen will operate both inside and outside. The signing was designed to bolster the overall receiving unit rather than address questions about Pierce’s availability.
Pierce has remained on the physically unable to perform list throughout training camp as he recovers from offseason ankle surgery. Although the team initially projected a one to two-week recovery timeline, Pierce has yet to participate in practice activities during the fourth week of camp and will not be available for upcoming joint sessions against Atlanta. However, Steichen expressed optimism about Pierce’s progress, noting that the receiver is moving well during indoor workouts and showing positive signs of a return.
General manager Chris Ballard previously stated that the organization still expects Pierce to be ready for the regular season’s start. Steichen reiterated this timeline, suggesting that Pierce’s return to action is approaching.
