OpenAI has announced a significant expansion of ChatGPT’s capabilities for its free tier users. The company is eliminating text chat restrictions for all users, including those on the free and Go plans. This development comes as ChatGPT recently surpassed 1 billion weekly active users globally.
The rollout introduces the new GPT-5.6 Luna model as the default for free and Go tier subscribers, succeeding the previous GPT-5.5 version. Both user groups will also receive access to a “Think” button feature, enabling them to allocate additional computational resources when tackling complex queries. However, OpenAI clarified that limitations remain in place for file uploads, image inputs, voice interactions, and image generation functions.
Premium subscribers are receiving their own enhancements through the upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model, optimized for rapid-response tasks including research, writing, and decision-making assistance. Plus and Pro users can now adjust a thinking slider to control the depth of analysis applied to each question. Internal testing demonstrated that the new Luna and Sol models significantly reduced factual inaccuracies compared to earlier versions, with Luna showing a 62% reduction and Sol achieving a 68% decrease in errors.
The Sol variant for premium tiers became available immediately, while free and Go user features will roll out throughout the week, with unlimited text chats and the Think button arriving the following week.
