Jason Arday has stepped down from his position as a sociology professor at the University of Cambridge following fresh scrutiny of his academic credentials. Arday made history in 2023 when he became the youngest Black professor in the institution’s history. His resignation took effect immediately and included his fellowship at Jesus College.
The departure comes after Cambridge announced it would investigate newly received information regarding Arday’s qualifications and honorary positions. This inquiry is separate from an ongoing academic misconduct review already in progress. Arday cited months of intense public questioning and allegations as reasons for his decision, stating the situation had become untenable for both himself and his family.
Arday has faced multiple allegations of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis and other published work, though Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his PhD in 2015, found no wrongdoing after its own investigation. The researcher has consistently maintained his innocence and disputed claims that he misrepresented aspects of his personal history. In his resignation statement, Arday characterized his departure as temporary, expressing his intention to return following a period of recovery.
