Filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s documentary “14th” has secured a Netflix release date of December 4, following its theatrical debut in limited U.S. and U.K. venues on November 27. The film will premiere globally on the streaming platform after its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 9 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, where it will serve as the closing night selection.
The documentary explores the 14th Amendment and its ongoing impact on American society. Building on her previous work “13th,” which investigated racial injustices within the prison system, DuVernay examines how the constitutional amendment intended to establish equality has instead become a source of persistent conflict. According to the film’s description, it investigates fundamental questions about citizenship and belonging in contemporary America.
The project features extensive commentary from prominent voices across multiple disciplines. Notable contributors include politicians such as Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Alex Padilla, alongside legal scholars and historians including Pulitzer Prize winners Eric Foner and David Blight. The documentary incorporates over 50 expert interviews addressing the contested interpretation of the amendment that has shaped American legal and social discourse for more than 150 years.
