Australian director Darren Dale’s documentary series “2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback” has secured a global distribution deal with Netflix ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this month. The four-part series, which launches at TIFF’s Primetime strand on September 10, examines the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker by Northern Territory police officer Zachary Rolfe in the remote community of Yuendumu.
Dale’s directorial debut uses archival material, court proceedings, and personal interviews to reconstruct the incident from multiple angles, focusing on the 2.6 seconds between the first and final shots that transformed the lives of those involved and sparked broader national conversation. Rather than presenting a simple narrative, the series explores the complexities surrounding both the young officer and the victim, examining systemic issues and individual circumstances that converged in that critical moment.
The production marks another significant project from Dale, who previously directed “The Tall Man” in 2012, addressing the death of an Aboriginal man in police custody, and the AACTA-award-winning drama “Total Control,” which also premiered at TIFF in 2019. “2.6 Seconds” was produced by Blackfella Films in partnership with SBS and NITV, with funding support from Screen Australia’s First Nations division and Screen NSW, distributed internationally through All3Media.
