A devastating bus accident in eastern Hungary claimed at least 12 lives on Sunday, with emergency responders reporting an additional 10 people sustained serious injuries. The vehicle, operated by a Polish tour company, veered off the M3 motorway near Mezokeresztes and overturned into a ditch while traveling between Serbia and Poland.
The bus was carrying 57 passengers and two drivers at the time of the incident. Rescue workers faced significant challenges extracting trapped passengers, with firefighters forced to pull several victims through windows to reach them. Authorities documented 11 fatalities at the scene, while a 12th victim succumbed to injuries while receiving hospital treatment. An additional 37 people suffered minor injuries.
Police investigations suggest driver fatigue may have contributed to the crash, with preliminary findings indicating the operator may have fallen asleep. The driver has been taken into custody pending further investigation. This incident marks Hungary’s deadliest road accident since 2003, when a train struck a bus carrying German tourists, resulting in 33 deaths.
Leaders from both nations expressed their condolences. Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski acknowledged the tragedy, while Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar commended the efforts of emergency personnel who responded to the scene.
