Coach Rita Stubbs made several substitution decisions throughout the contest, looking to spark an offense that struggled to gain momentum against the Gauchos. The Wildcats demonstrated their willingness to experiment with lineup changes, but ultimately could not find the formula needed to secure a victory.
Recognizing early performance issues from starting outside hitter Carlie Cisneros and middle blocker Journey Tucker, Stubbs turned to bench players Payton Woods and Kristen Dear. Woods made her regular season debut as a transfer, while Dear earned extended playing time for the first time all weekend. Both players contributed immediately, with Dear recording two kills, two digs, and two blocks in the match. Their aggressive play helped Arizona stay competitive in close sets, but the team could not capitalize on late-set advantages.
UC Santa Barbara dominated most statistical categories, recording 53 kills compared to Arizona’s 32 and maintaining a .256 hitting percentage advantage. However, the Gauchos’ 18 service errors kept the match within reach. Arizona led 23-20 in the second set and held a 21-17 advantage in the third before faltering down the stretch. Tournament MVP Sophia Wendlick led the UCSB offensive attack throughout the match.
Opposite hitter Renee Jones provided a bright spot for Arizona, earning all-tournament honors with seven kills on .375 hitting Sunday. She accumulated 19 kills across the weekend while filling in due to an injury. As competition increases, Arizona’s struggling outside hitters will need to find consistency when the team travels to face Creighton, Tulsa, and Pepperdine next week.
