NASA made history on Sunday by conducting its first official flyover of a football game, as two T-38 Talon jets from the Johnson Space Center in Houston streaked across the sky above Acrisure Stadium during the Pittsburgh Steelers’ season opener. The supersonic aircraft, which are used by astronauts for flight readiness training, performed the demonstration at the start of the Week 1 matchup.
The flyover represented part of a broader initiative by NASA to generate public enthusiasm for its upcoming space exploration goals. The agency is preparing for the next Artemis mission scheduled for 2027, with plans for a lunar landing in 2028. Pittsburgh was selected as the location for this inaugural event, making the city a fitting backdrop for NASA’s promotional effort.
Anthony Vareha, NASA’s Flight Director and a native of Pittsburgh, explained the significance of the event to local media. Vareha noted that Pittsburgh has long served as an inspiration hub for those interested in space exploration and scientific discovery. He credited his own upbringing in the region with launching his career path, which ultimately led him to positions at Cape Canaveral and the Johnson Space Center, where he currently oversees space missions.
